Dr. Brian Maugo
Dr. Brian Maugo is a Consultant Paediatrician at Kenyatta National Hospital and Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at the University of Nairobi, with over a decade of experience in newborn and child healthcare. He holds an MMed in Paediatrics from the University of Nairobi, a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship from the University of British Columbia, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Neonatology from the University of Southampton. He supervises postgraduate research, contributes to national newborn care guidelines, and has co-authored several peer-reviewed studies on maternal and child health. He is passionate about advancing HIE care in Kenya and is currently working with hospitals to ensure therapeutic hypothermia is done correctly.
Dr. Yvonne Nyakeri
Dr. Yvonne Nyakeri is a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Neurologist at UbuntuNeurology, delivering inpatient and outpatient neurology and general paediatric care, interpreting neonatal and paediatric EEGs, and supporting health providers across rural and urban counties. She holds an MMed in Paediatrics from the University of Nairobi and completed a Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Neurology at the University of British Columbia/BC Children's Hospital, Canada. She chairs the East African Child Neurology Association, serves as Vice Secretary of the International League Against Epilepsy (Kenya Chapter), and is Course Director for the Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET 1–3) courses, alongside teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Nairobi. She is dedicated to helping families understand and navigate the HIE journey.
Ms. Deborah Mate
Deborah Mate is a psychologist committed to advancing mental health through advocacy, education, and capacity building. With over 12 years of experience in individual and group therapy, she specializes in designing and delivering workplace wellness programs, safeguarding training, and policy development. She is passionate about working with special needs families and has been running a CSR program for caregivers/mothers of special needs children in Korogocho. She is committed to helping families navigating HIE to cope and thrive through mentorship. Deborah holds a B.A in Psychology from United States International University (USIU), Diploma in Leadership and Management from Strathmore University and an ongoing MSC in Artificial Intelligence Applications in Mental Health, Mental Health Innovation.
Ms. Julie Ndung’u
Julie Ndung’u is a mother to an amazing HIE girl who has enriched her life greatly. She is
passionate about driving awareness and support for HIE families having benefited greatly from the Hope for HIE community. She strongly believes that driving awareness and collaboration with different stakeholders can help not only improve outcomes for infants and families with a HIE diagnosis, but also reduce the occurrence of HIE in Kenya.
She is also a program management and monitoring & evaluation professional with over a decade of experience driving impact in health and development programs across Kenya. She has led the design and implementation of M&E frameworks, managed donor reporting and stakeholder engagement, and overseen data systems that inform evidence-based decision-making. Julie holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics from the same institution.
Ms. Terry Gatauwa
Terry Mumbi Gatauwa has over 10 years of experience in designing, managing, and strengthening health and development programmes. Her expertise spans programme strategy, resource mobilization, cultivating strategic partnerships, proposal development, donor engagement, grant acquisition, strategic communications, knowledge management, and stakeholder engagement. Terry has supported the acquisition of more than USD 15 million in donor funding for health and development programmes. She has worked closely with leading international development partners, including USAID, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Global Fund, and the World Health Organization (WHO), among others. Terry is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Strategic Management at Kenyatta University. She holds a certification in Practical Project Management and Sustainability from Amref International University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Daystar University.
Ms. Beatrice Munyiva
Beatrice has over a decade of experience spanning across diverse fields including strategic corporate communications, stakeholder management, program development, alumni relations and youth leadership development. She is currently the Alumni and Volunteer Relations Manager at Regional Leadership Center East Africa where she oversees programs that connect over 6,000 alumni across 14 countries in East and Central Africa. Beatrice has experience working for local and international organizations including USAID East Africa, Deloitte, International Medical Corps-Somalia, USIU-Africa and Population Services Kenya. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Hons.) in Journalism (Public Relations and Broadcast Media) and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Communication studies with a focus on strategic corporate communications from the same institution.
