HIE in Kenya

In Kenya, HIE is a great concern with over 30% of neonatal deaths attributed to neonatal HIE. Data on the exact number of babies who suffer HIE and survive is missing but global statistics show that two-three in every 1,000 full term births in high income countries and 10-30 per 1,000 live births in low and middle income countries are affected by HIE every year. This translates to approximately 17,000-51,000 babies suffering HIE yearly in Kenya.

1. What is Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)?

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy is a type of brain injury that occurs when a baby’s brain does not receive enough oxygen and blood flow around the time of birth. In Kenya, HIE is a major contributor to neonatal deaths and long term developmental challenges. Early medical care and structured follow up improve outcomes for affected children.

2. What support does Together for HIE provide to families in Kenya?

Together for HIE Foundation and Trust supports families through education, guidance, and access to follow up care after hospital discharge. We help families understand HIE, participate in care decisions, and connect with support systems. We also work with hospitals to strengthen referral pathways and long term care systems.

3. Why is follow up care important after a child is diagnosed with HIE?

Follow up care tracks a child’s development and identifies challenges early. Many children affected by HIE require therapy, medical reviews, and developmental monitoring. In Kenya, structured follow up is limited, which leaves families without clear support. Strong follow up systems improve long term health and quality of life.
